rTMS for Depression – The Benefits

This is a new type of depression therapy that is non-invasive and does not involve medication. Our experts empathise with how challenging it can be to find the right medication to improve symptoms of depression. Many patients can struggle with unwanted physical and psychological side effects. Unfortunately, for some people, medicines have no effect whatsoever, positive or otherwise.

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation can be used in addition to medication but you can experience the benefits on its own, with no other clinical treatments. This therapy is completely pain-free and you will not need to be sedated or anaesthetised. Repeated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is not at all like Electrical Convulsive Treatment (ECT).

rTMS treatment provides tangible positive effects at a quicker rate than clinical depression medication. You won’t have to change the way you live your daily life or habits, as this treatment is backed by science.

We understand real people behind the problem, using compassion and empathy alongside clinical expertise.

How does rTMS Depression Treatment Work?

rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation), is a clinical therapy for depression that is a positive and pain free experience for all.

Starting in 2008, we have spent the last 30 years creating and developing rTMS resulting in our work being recognised by the FDA in the USA. The NICE has now approved in England. Our clinic was the first in the region to offer this new treatment to the general public.

rTMS works by stimulating targeted areas of the brain, associated with depression, with magnetic pulses. These magnetic pulses target the nerve cells in the region of the brain which control mood, they can activate regions of the brain that have decreased activity, which is common in people with depression.

If you’re suffering from depression and would like to find out if rTMS treatment is right for you, you can contact the team at TranquilTMS via the online contact form or by giving the Cheadle clinic a call on 0800 193 0914 today. As the first rTMS clinic in the North West, we’ve helped patients from Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and the surrounding areas combat and overcome their depression.

YOUR ASSESSMENT

At your consultation, our consultant will ask about your medical history. We will make a decision as to whether this treatment can help you. During the consultation, we will discuss in detail the treatment process and what it involves – the duration, and how many appointments you may need. Our team are committed to getting to know each individual. This is a vital part of how we put together a bespoke treatment plan to start you on the process of recovery.

YOUR TREATMENT

You will not need to prepare before your first session. When you arrive, you will be seated in a reclining chair, with a magnetic coil placed above your head. A member of the team will position the plate next to the targeted area, and turn on the machine. You will be awake and conscious, with no pain for the entire 20-30 minutes of treatment. While the environment may seem clinical at first, all former clients have reported a positive experience from start to finish.

AFTERWARDS

You can resume your normal daily routine immediately after the treatment. While rare, some people may experience a slight tingling sensation or mild irritation on the scalp soon after the first session – but this tends to stop after a few sessions.

Are you based in the North West, and need quick depression treatment that needs no medication? Our team are here to help, so feel free to reach out today by phone or contact form. Located in Cheadle, you can reach us easily from Manchester, Liverpool, Cheshire and beyond.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need?

TMS treatment is generally given 5 days a week for up to 4-6 weeks. The number of sessions needed for positive results is different for each person. This will be decided by the consultant and will be discussed at initial appointment.

What does a rTMS treatment feel like?

You may feel a tapping sensation on the area of your scalp underneath the plate, in rhythm with the magnetic pulses. Other than this, however, there are no physical sensations. Patients often choose to read, listen to music or rest during the sessions.

What is the difference between ECT and rTMS therapy?

Both ECT and rTMS are accepted treatments for depression and other mood-related conditions. One of the main differences, however, is that rTMS treatment is non-invasive and also does not require any anaesthetic. While there are a range of side-effects associated with ECT, only minimal side effects are related to rTMS therapy.

Is there a recovery period after rTMS session?

There is no recovery period after a rTMS session, and you can resume your daily activities immediately. Some patients may feel mild scalp irritation or tingling after their first session, but this usually goes away on subsequent visits.

What are the contraindications to rTMS?

Anyone with metal implants, aneurysm clips and coils, cardiac pacemakers, cardiac defibrillators, facial tattoos that may have magnetic ink or ink that is sensitive to magnets, implanted stimulators, metal implants in the ears or eyes, stents in the neck or brain, bullet fragments or shrapnel near the head. Contraindications also include epilepsy and other neurological conditions.

What are the benefits of rTMS?
    • Easily Tolerated
    • Non-invasive and no medication
    • No anaesthesia or sedation
    • No change in daily activities
    • Minimal side effects
    • Quicker response compared to antidepressants
What are the Side Effects of rTMS?

One of the main benefits of rTMS is its minimal side effects. The potential side effects of rTMS include discomfort at the site of stimulation, scalp discomfort, transient headache, neck pain and facial twitching during treatment. In very rare cases, a seizure may occur.
“Recent NICE guidance (IPG 542) concluded that evidence on rTMS for depression showed no major safety concerns.” -The Royal College of Psychiatrists
